Background and Location of Strand

Strand is located in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and falls under the Helderberg area just outside Central Cape Town. The name “Strand” is also known as “beach” in Afrikaans.

Strand is a seaside resort town, which has a population of 50 000 people and located on the eastern edge of False Bay situated at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains. Strand is found just between Macassar and the Gordon’s Bay, which is approximately 50km southeast of Cape Town.

Things to See and Do in and around Strand

Strand was founded in 1714 and originated a few hundred years ago as a holiday and fishing resort. Strand’s main attraction is the beach which spans 5 kilometers of white sandy beaches lapped by the waters of False Bay. This amazing stretch of beach boasts stunning views of the Cape Peninsula.

Blue Rock Water Sports

Blue Rock

Blue Rock is found on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains just before Sir Lowry’s Pass. Lake Blue Rock offers spectacular crystal clear water and a depth of 60m. Blue Rock’s main attraction is their cable (overhead pulling system) which is used for all sorts of waterskiing and is ideally suited for wakeboarding.

Blue Rock offers the following facilities:

  • TBlue Rock Water Ski Resorthe Blue Rock Restaurant and Café Bar is a Pizza a la Italia with a wide range of Mediterranean dishes and freshly made desserts and Cakes. The Restaurant also caters for functions of all sizes.

Monkey Town

Monkey Town in Somerset WestMonkey Town is a wildlife center for monkeys and apes with more than 230 animals and 28 different exotic species. Monkey Town also has koi ponds, a variety of bird species and small antelope on the premises.

On the premises you will find a restaurant as well as a play park for children and swimming pools, which is accompanied by a huge picnic and braai area.

Erinvale Golf Estate

This beautiful manicured golf course is situated Somerset West boasts spectacular mountain and sea views. The course was host to the 1996 World Cup of Golf in which thirty two participating nations competed. The front nine is on the flat, winding between many houses, while the back nine climbs up the lower slopes of the magnificent Helderberg  mountain.

Designed by Gary Player Erinvale’s demanding front nine meanders through park-like terrain, whilst the back nine provide a contrasting challenge winding it’s way through the foothills of the mountains with panoramic views of False Bay.

Directions:

Take the N2 from the city centre towards Cape Town International Airport and then take the Stellenbosch/Broadway (exit 43) turn-off onto the R44. Stay left and then turn right at the first set of traffic lights into Main Road. (The Lord Charles Hotel will be on the left). Continue through Somerset West and turn left into Lourensford Road, continue for approximately 5kms on Lourensford Road, where you will see the golf course and the estate on the left hand side.
